All International applications on receiving an Acceptance letter and are preparing to come to Canada must do the following:
1. Receipt of the Acceptance Letter
Upon receipt of the Acceptance Letter, applicants will need to confirm the offer to enroll and send the signed confirmation along with the signed Student Handbook: by the deadline stated in the Acceptance Letter.
2. Payment of Program Fee
- All International applicants must pay $425.00 or 8% ( maximum of $1000. ) of the tuition when accepting the offer to enroll
- Payment options include Visa, MasterCard, cheque, money order or cash/debit (in person). Credit card transactions will incur a 1% surcharge
- On receiving the payment, CIT will issue the student a payment receipt and Confirmation of Enrollment
The remainder tuition fee can be paid on the first day of classes or periodically
3. Apply for a Student Study Permit *
- To apply for a study permit, students must go online to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website
- Applicants have the option of either completing an online application form or downloading a paper application form

*All international students must obtain a study permit for a program that is more than six months or for a program six months or less if it has an integrated and mandatory work component
4. Orientation
Orientation takes place on the first day of classes, where students learn about the program outline, schedule, and get an introduction to the instructors, administrative staff and other students
Specific orientation for international students will be held in advance of orientation for Canadian students
Orientation topics will include:
- Tips on everything you need to know to be a successful student
- In-depth examination of the international Student Handbook
- Becoming familiar with adjusting to life in Canada, and Edmonton (what to expect in terms of weather, festivals, events, etc.)
- Filing Canadian Tax Returns to get Government Refunds
- Living in Edmonton and City of Edmonton Services
- Opening a bank account, transferring funds, and obtaining credit cards
- Payment of tuition
- HealthCare & Insurance, Visiting a Doctor and locating a Medical entre or walk-in clinic
- Student Rights and where to go for help
- Campus Tour
Activities are organized at orientation that helps students to learn about one and another and culture, to help all students become comfortable with the school and among various culture. If practical, international students will be partnered with Canadian students of similar culture.
CIT is committed to ensuring the comfort and success of students from other countries and other cultures. Canada has a diverse blend of cultures, where possible, an international student is linked with a Canadian student from a similar background. While a link program helps an international student feel less an outsider, our international student office, have the responsibility to provide student services. Our international student office is responsible for arrival and orientation services, immigration regulations, Citizenship and Immigration Canada regulations. All students are given total attention, rather than been treated as a numbers and a personal interest is taken in each student’s well being.
International student should have arrange for accommodation prior to arriving in Canada. Assistance is available to students before they come to Edmonton, so that they will be able to settle in and start applying their focus to their studies.
Support to international students is available for counselling and health care. We direct students to appropriate places, depending on the student’s need. Academic support is constantly available and international students are regularly assessed to their comfort and ability to meet the academic requirements of the program he or she is attending.
When you arrive in Canada:
- Contact CIT’s International student office at 587-557-1081 Ext. 6 if you are going to need to schedule airport pickup.
- Provide all required entry documents to the Canada Immigration officer on arrival.
- Contact your family to tell them you have arrived safely.
- Attend the Orientation Program.
- Get a student student I.D. card (provided at Orientation).
- Open a bank account.
- Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) (necessary if you will be working with an off-campus work permit)
5. Insurance
- It is mandatory for all international students outside of Canada to ensure that they purchase health insurance for the duration of the program, prior to arriving into Canada
- “Students with Study Permits valid for more than 3 months, but less than 12 months, may be eligible for AHCIP coverage if their application is accompanied by a letter from the student confirming their intent to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months.”

As such, an insurance policy can be purchased from any number of reputable organizations, including: SunLife Financial and Manulife Financial
6. Transportation
- To get around the city, students can make use of the public transit (buses and LRT)
- Public transit is accessible to everyone. Please refer to the following link to know more about the bus routes and schedules
7. Housing
- International students who do not have family in Canada and plan on living alone must arrange for accommodation for their duration of stay in Canada
- Students can find accommodation in Calgary or Edmonton using website such as Rentfaster.ca, and viewit.ca
- Information about Canadian Homestay programs can be found at http://www.canadahomestaynetwork.ca/index.html Students can also contact the Canford Institute Of Technology office for assistance in finding a suitable accommodation, by e-mailing
- Note that Canford Institute of Technology does not directly manage housing or homestay program. The reliability of the housing program is the responsibility of the respective housing service providers.
8. Additional Support
- Our staff members are familiar with various cultures, themselves having been born elsewhere and/or having visited many places worldwide
- Our support staff are available to assist international students daily, during our regular office hours of M-F 9 AM – 5PM
- Our instructors are available for assistance if students are struggling, daily, a half hour before class and a half hour after class Career guidance and employability training is provided to all students

- There are various counselling services available in the community that students can use

10. Refund Policy
Please note that the $130.00 CDN International Student Application Fee is non-refundable
There will also be no refunds issued for Enrolment Fee if an International Student terminates their enrollment prior to applying for their Student Visa or if an International Student terminates their enrollment after receiving their Student Visa.
However, a refund of Enrolment Fee will be issued if an International Student applies for a Student Visa and gets denied, as long as the students sends Canford Institute of Technology a copy of their denial letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

11. English Language Proficiency
The language of instruction and communication at CIT is English.
In addition to each program’s admission requirements. all international applicants must demonstrate that they are proficient in the English language in order to be successful in their training. Unless specifically stated in the program admission
requirements. English language proficiency requirement can be satisfied if the applicant has earned a high school diploma from secondary school (or above) in a system in which English is the official language of instruction. If English was not the applicant’s first language, the applicant will need to meet the minimum English Language Proficiency standard. English test scores are valid only if dated within two years of application. Acceptable evidence of ELP may be one of the following:
- CLBA 7 in each strand
- TOEFL Internet-based test score 71 (overall score) PBT: 560
- IELTS Academic 6.0, with no band score below 5.0
- CAEL score of 60

14. Communication Skills and Infrastructure
The world has become a global village, with Internet technology helps persons and groups to communicate seamlessly across the globe. CIT understands that international students come from different cultural backgrounds, and have varying career aspirations. We provide every registered student with information technology facilities (including a laptop and free Wi-Fi), in order to facilitate seamless communications among students; students and staff on one hand; and students with their families. Our instructors are from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures, and fully understand the cultural and learning needs of international students. In addition, our programs are enriched with courses in communication skills – to assist students develop the ability to effectively communicate in multi-cultural work environment.
